$10,000 Goal

A healthy person can take 630 million breaths in a lifetime.

But for thousands of Western Australians living with lung disease, every breath is a struggle.

Lung cancer is WA’s biggest cancer killer - taking more lives than breast and prostate cancer combined. Over 850,000 people in our state live with chronic lung conditions and the number is rising. Yet respiratory research remains critically underfunded.

For 25 years, the Institute for Respiratory Health has led life-changing research that’s given back trillions of breaths to those who need them most. But there is still more to do.

Your donation today will help fund critical new research that can improve treatments, give people with lung disease a better quality of life and ensure they have more time with the people they love.

Donate today and help give back more breaths that lung disease takes away.

How your donation supports research that gives back more breaths.

Malignant Pleural Effusion

Professor Gary Lee's research focuses on patient-centred care that goes beyond medical treatment to address the daily challenges of those living with malignant (cancer) pleural effusion. It integrates dietetics, exercise and psychological support to improve how these devastating lung diseases are managed.

Cystic Fibrosis

Through our world-leading clinical trials centre, we conducted vital research that played a key role in the drug’s approval, helping to ensure thousands of people living with cystic fibrosis — including Western Australians — can access breakthrough treatments like Trikafta and experience longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.

Pulmonary Fibrosis

Many people with pulmonary fibrosis want to spend their final days at home, but too often end up in hospital. Associate Professor Vidya Navaratnam’s research aims to change this by improving community support and ensuring people with PF have real choice and dignity in end-of-life care.

New Research Discoveries

Professor Yuben Moodley and his team have discovered that certain blood cells may be causing lung damage. The good news is they’ve found a way to reduce that damage and are applying for funding to take the treatment to clinical trials. There’s more to do, but the potential offers real hope.

“It's research like this that gives back more breaths - and it's made possible by generous people like you.” Lidia

“Greg believed in the power of research - it gave us more time together. I want others to have that chance too.” Lidia

Lidia's husband Greg was diagnosed with stage 4 asbestos-induced cancer. Thanks to innovative research and holistic care, they were given 22 precious months together. Today, Lidia plays an active role in guiding this work through the patient reference group supporting Professor Gary Lee’s study - helping others with lung disease live longer, stronger, and with more dignity.
